The Athletic’s Manchester United correspondent Laurie Whitwell has provided an encouraging update on Angel Gomes’ contract situation at Old Trafford.
The 19-year-old’s current deal is set to expire in four months’ time, and he rejected an offer of a new contract from the Red Devils earlier this season.
Gomes – who made his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace aged just 16 years and 263 days – has made five first-team appearances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season.
The teenager has started three Europa League games for United, while also making two substitute outings in the Premier League – however, he hasn’t appeared at all since a 4-0 win over Norwich in the middle of January.
For those wondering the latest on his situation, Whitwell has shed light on it.
What did he say?
Whitwell wrote in his post-Everton Q&A session: “I’ve seen the rumours about an agreement being reached. Told that isn’t the case. But I think it’s more positive than it was.”
Encouraging stuff
While there has been no concrete news surrounding the situation, Whitwell’s update is encouraging to see.
The fact that things look “more positive” than they were can only be deemed a good thing at this point, even more so given the hype around this young prospect.
The likes of Barcelona are believed to be sniffing around the Englishman, so it seems imperative that United persuade the wonderkid that his future is best placed at Old Trafford.

The aforementioned news of him rejecting an offer earlier this season was bleak, although Whitwell’s comments provide some hope that a turnaround can be made in negotiations to keep the coveted youngster at the club.
